JUDITHA TRIUMPHANS DEVICTA HOLOFERNIS BARBARIE (RV 644)

oratorium with libreto by Giacomo Cassetti from 1716 for five female soloists, orchestra and choire soloists, orchestra and choir

Introducing the work:

This sacred oratorio for solo female voices, women’s choir and orchestra can be found in the catalogue of Vivaldi’s works under number 644. It is the only one of Vivaldi’s four oratorios that has survived to this day and the composer completed it in Venice in 1716.

This was while he was working in the girls’ orphanage, the Ospedale della Pieta, and it is believed that the orphan girls not only sang all the principal roles, but also sang in the choir and played in the orchestra.

Juditha Triumphans: premiere on 25th July 2024 in Znojmo

Reviews from critics and the professional public:

“Conductor Válek thoroughly relished the orchestra’s rich and colorful scoring (four violas da gamba, for example), especially in the dramatic moments. (…) The music, extremely colourful and fully respected at every moment, dominated all this… It was a beautiful, unusual evening.” Zuzana Ledererová (Polyharmonie), August 2024

“In addition to classical string and woodwind instruments, instruments such as the viola d’amore, viola da gamba, three theorbas and mandolin were also heard from the orchestra gallery. Woodwinds, recorders and traverso, oboes, chalumeaus and two clarinets were also multiplied, their jubilant notes celebrating both the troops of Holofernes and the victory of Judith. Of course, there was the organ, harpsichord and the timpani made their presence felt with vigour. The result was a dense, layered sound capable of expressing the emotions of the individual characters.” Karla Hofmannová (KlasikaPlus), July 2024

“Ernman played the role of the fierce Assyrian general on stage and demonstrated her mastery of early music interpretation. (…) Not only in the solo parts, but also overall, the Czech Ensemble Baroque Orchestra confirmed its high standard in Vivaldi’s Judith, as we know it from its annual productions when combining historically informed interpretation with the musicianship of conductor Roman Valek.” Helena Havliková (OperaPlus), July 2024

The conductor of the orchestra Roman Válek says of the work:

“This unique work by Antonio Vivaldi, with a content which is more than relevant today, is unique above all for its rich instrumentation (the use of non-traditional instruments). Thanks to the wide instrumentation at the place of the work’s creation – the Ospedale della Pieta orphanage in Venice – but rather a kind of unique musical conservatory – the oratorio is particularly captivating for its musical peculiarities, two recorders as a lullaby, four theorbas at a banquet, a mandolin and a small chalumeau clarinet fluttering like a dove are just a small list of the wonderful colourful moments that abound in this Vivaldi’s work.”

Opera star Malena Ernman said:

“I’ve met so many lovely people. And the voices! You have so many wonderful singers in the Czech Republic! My colleagues who sing with me in Judith, that’s wonderful. Dagmar Šašková, Doubravka Součková. And so are the other Czech colleagues and Maya Amir, although she’s from Israel. Roman Válek selected us in such a way that it would be a pleasure for me to come back and sing with any of them again.”

Technical details of the performance:

Our Juditha Triumphans performance is easily adaptable to any theatre space. Individual set elements, props and costume equipment are relatively easy to transpose. The sets are not complicated or expensive – the production is primarily based on lighting design. Part of the set is a projection foil, where the colouring of the scene is done by lighting this projection foil.

Total length of performance: 120 min + 1 interval

Additional notes:
● we are able to import all stage elements (costumes, props, etc.) – there are not many elements, they fit in one delivery – they are part of the budget
● technical things like lights, beamer etc. are not part of the budget – if they need to be imported, a special truck will have to be ordered
